Start Your Japan Road Trip at Narita Airport: Campervan Rentals & Routes

You land at Narita after a long flight. Instead of dragging your luggage onto a train into Tokyo, you walk to your campervan, load your bags and drive off. Your trip starts the moment you arrive.

Narita Airport is one of the easiest places in Japan to start a road trip. It sits outside central Tokyo, so you can reach the expressways heading north, west and to the coast without driving through the city. With a campervan, you don't need to book a hotel for every night. You can change your plans as you go and stop wherever the view is good.

This guide covers everything you need to start driving from Narita: what to prepare before pickup, where to spend your first night, road trip routes in four directions with the best season for each, and four campervans you can rent at Narita.

Why Narita is a great place to start a campervan trip

You skip central Tokyo

Narita is in northern Chiba, east of Tokyo. From the airport, the Ken-O Expressway (Metropolitan Inter-City Expressway) loops around the city and connects to the main expressways heading north and west. You can be on your way to the mountains or the coast without facing Tokyo's busy, complex city roads, which is a big relief if you're new to driving in Japan.

You start the day you land

Many campervans can be picked up at or near the airport. Your first day isn't spent getting from the airport to your accommodation. It's the first day of your trip.

You're not tied to hotel bookings

Weather, crowds and seasonal highlights don't always go to plan. With a campervan, your bed comes with you, so you can stay an extra night somewhere you love or move on early if it rains.

You don't carry luggage around Japan

Big suitcases on trains and in hotel lobbies are one of the hardest parts of traveling in Japan. In a campervan, you unpack once.

Before you pick up your campervan

Bring the right driving documents

To drive in Japan, most visitors need an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, along with their home license. Visitors from some countries use an official Japanese translation of their license instead. Japan does not issue International Driving Permits after you arrive, so get yours before you travel.

For details, see The Complete Guide to Renting a Campervan in Japan.

Check that the campervan accepts foreign licenses

Some campervans on Carstay can only be rented by guests with a Japanese driver's license. This is shown on the vehicle page, so check before you book.

Confirm your pickup plan with the owner

Some campervans are based right by the airport. Others are delivered to Narita on request, often for an extra fee. Some owners also ask international guests for a deposit or set a minimum rental period. Message the owner before booking with your flight number, arrival time and number of travelers, and agree on exactly where to meet.

Don't plan a long drive on day one

After a long-haul flight, you may be more tired than you feel. Japan drives on the left, and a campervan is bigger than most cars. Keep your first day short and save the long drive for day two.

Day 1: spend your first night near the airport

The easiest way to beat jet lag is to drive a short distance, rest well, and set off properly the next morning.

One option is Vanlife BASE, an overnight spot for campervans in Kujukuri, a quiet seaside town on the Chiba coast. It's about 45 minutes from Narita Airport and welcomes international travelers. Book your spot in advance, pick up some food at a supermarket on the way, and spend your first evening by the Pacific instead of in a hotel room.

From Kujukuri, you can continue along the Chiba coast or head inland to the expressways the next morning.

Wherever you stay, follow Japan's car camping etiquette. Rest areas and roadside stations are not campsites, and the rules differ from place to place. Our guide to car camping etiquette in Japan explains what to know.

Road trip routes from Narita Airport

Here are four directions you can take from Narita, from a relaxed weekend on the coast to a week in northern Japan. Drive times are rough estimates without traffic.

East and south: the Chiba coast (1–2 nights)

  • Best season: Year-round. Winters on the coast are mild.
  • Drive time: About 45 minutes to Kujukuri, then further south along the Boso Peninsula.
  • Route idea: Spend night one on the Kujukuri coast, then drive south down the Boso Peninsula for ocean views, fishing ports and fresh seafood.

This is the easiest route if you only have a few days, or if you want to get used to driving on the left before a longer trip.

North: Nikko and Nasu (2–3 nights)

  • Best season: Autumn for the foliage (October), and summer for cooler mountain air.
  • Drive time: About 2.5–3 hours.
  • Route idea: Visit the shrines and temples of Nikko, drive the winding Irohazaka road through the mountains, then continue to the highland resort of Nasu with its hot springs.

In autumn, the roads to Nikko's viewpoints get very crowded on weekends. Sleeping nearby in your campervan lets you arrive early, before the traffic builds up.

West: Mt. Fuji and Lake Kawaguchi (2–3 nights)

  • Best season: Winter for the clearest views of Mt. Fuji, early to mid November for autumn colors around the lake, and April for cherry blossoms.
  • Drive time: About 3 hours via the Ken-O Expressway and Chuo Expressway.
  • Route idea: Base yourself around Lake Kawaguchi and wake up to Mt. Fuji outside your window. Then explore the other Fuji Five Lakes at your own pace.

Mt. Fuji is often clearest early in the morning, and staying nearby overnight makes it easy to catch. For a real trip in a small campervan, read Mt. Fuji Through the Window: A Vanlife Road Trip in a Kei Camper.

Far north: Tohoku (4 nights or more)

  • Best season: Mid-October to early November for some of Japan's best autumn foliage, and early August for the big summer festivals.
  • Drive time: About 4.5–5 hours to Zao, and a full day's drive to Lake Towada and Oirase Gorge.
  • Route idea: Head north on the Tohoku Expressway. Drive the Zao Echo Line and look into the crater lake of Okama, soak in a mountain hot spring, then continue north to the Hachimantai Aspite Line and the forest trails of Oirase Gorge.

In autumn, the foliage moves from north to south. The northern mountains around Hachimantai and Oirase peak first, from mid to late October, and southern Tohoku around Zao follows from late October to early November. Peak timing shifts by several days each year, so with no hotel bookings you can follow the colors wherever they are best.

In winter, Tohoku gets heavy snow. Only plan a winter trip in a campervan with winter tires and 4WD, and only if you're comfortable driving on snow.

Rather than a brand-new vehicle, we hope you'll enjoy it as if you were borrowing a campervan from a Japanese friend. ▼Regarding Usage - Reservations are accepted for a minimum of 72 hours. - For customers from overseas, a deposit of 100,000 yen is required in addition to the reservation fee. Return day: plan backward from your flight

Work back from your departure time

Airlines recommend arriving well ahead of international flights, so check your airline's guidance. Then add time for returning the campervan, the handover check and getting to your terminal. Set a return time that leaves plenty of margin.

Spend your last night close to Narita

Expressways around Tokyo can be slow, especially on weekend and holiday afternoons. Ending your trip on the Chiba coast or near the airport means a short, stress-free drive on your final morning.

Check the return conditions in advance

Some owners ask you to refuel before returning, or to empty the water tanks and take out your garbage. Confirm what's expected when you pick up the van, so you're not rushing on the last day.

Summary: your road trip starts at the arrivals gate

Narita lets you skip central Tokyo, pick up your campervan the day you land, and head straight for the coast, the mountains or the far north. Keep your first day short, choose a direction that fits the season, and leave plenty of time on your last day to make your flight.

With no hotels to book and no luggage to drag around, you can travel Japan at your own pace, from the moment you arrive.
