Whether you’re heading to the beach with a crew and a stack of surfboards, or traveling solo with multiple boards to match any wave condition, you might think a massive vehicle is required for a proper surf trip. If you've never surfed in Japan, you might wonder: "Can you really have a comfortable surf trip in a tiny Japanese microvan (Kei van)?"

As a lifelong surfer who lives in a microvan with my wife, chasing waves almost every day, I’m here to tell you that the "Kei Van × Surfing" lifestyle is not only possible—it’s incredibly rewarding. Beyond surfing, these compact vans are built for epic long-distance journeys. Here is a look at why a microvan is the ultimate vehicle for exploring Japan, including a peek into our summer road trip through Hokkaido.

How I Got Hooked on Japan's Vanlife Culture

I caught the surfing bug at age 18 thanks to my uncle. The real turning point, however, came in 2020 when I moved to Ichinomiya in Chiba Prefecture—famous for hosting the world’s first Olympic surfing competition.

Chiba’s Kujukuri Coast, along with spots like Katsuura, Onjuku, Kamogawa, and Minamiboso, makes it the ultimate mecca for surfing in Japan. Out in the water, I quickly noticed that many local surfers were living the vanlife, using campervans and custom vans to follow the waves. Naturally inspired, my wife and I got our own Japanese microvan, and we’ve been enjoying the perfect surf-and-vanlife balance ever since.

The Advantages of a "Kei Van × Surfing" Lifestyle

Since it’s just the two of us, we figured a microvan would be enough. It turned out to be the best decision we ever made. Here is why microvans are perfect for surfing in Japan:

1. Surprising Cargo Space

A "Kei van" is legally classified as a light cargo vehicle in Japan, meaning its interior layout is completely optimized for maximizing storage space. We easily fit our surfboards, water jugs, a tarp, an air bed, camping chairs, portable power stations, and all our surf gear.

2. Effortless Navigation on Narrow Coastal Roads

Many of Japan’s best surf spots are tucked away in rural areas where the roads can get incredibly narrow—sometimes barely wide enough for two regular cars to pass. With a compact microvan, you can navigate these tight spaces and park seamlessly without any stress. You can easily access hidden surf breaks that massive motorhomes simply cannot reach.

3. Highly Budget-Friendly

Kei vans are lightweight, fuel-efficient, and come with incredibly low maintenance costs and highway tolls in Japan. For surfers who love crossing prefecture lines for long-distance wave-hunting, saving money on fuel and tolls means more budget for your travels.

4. Cozier Overnight Stays (Shachuhaku)

Because the rear seats fold completely flat, turning a microvan into a stealth camper is incredibly easy. My wife and I sleep comfortably during our trips. Adding a roof rack or a roof box allows you to store boards outside at night, maximizing your indoor sleeping space.

Our Choice: The Daihatsu Atrai Microvan

We currently drive the Daihatsu Atrai (the newer model reclassified as a cargo van). Here is why this specific microvan stands out for surfers:

Fits Mid-Length Surfboards Inside

It can easily store surfboards up to 8 feet (approx. 244 cm) completely inside the vehicle. For longer boards, you can easily secure them to a roof carrier.

Powerful 4WD for Sandy Roads

Some surf spots in Japan require driving on rough terrain or loose sand. The Atrai’s turbo engine paired with 4WD ensures you won't get stuck on the beach.

Fits a Double Bed

Designed with outdoor enthusiasts in mind, installing a custom bed kit gives you a 140cm-wide sleeping area—the size of a standard double bed. It offers an incredible amount of headroom; you can sit up straight without your head touching the ceiling.

Other popular and highly recommended microvan models in Japan include the Suzuki Every, Honda N-VAN, and Daihatsu Hijet.

Testing the Limits: A Summer Road Trip Around Hokkaido

To see how our microvan would handle a massive long-distance journey, my wife and I embarked on a summer road trip to Hokkaido. We took the overnight car ferry from Oarai (Ibaraki Prefecture) to Tomakomai (Hokkaido).

It was a fast-paced, 1-week itinerary: Tomakomai → Obihiro → Kushiro (Kushiro Marsh) → Lake Akan → Shiretoko → Abashiri → Asahikawa → Biei → Furano → Sapporo → Tomakomai.

Despite the massive scale of Hokkaido, the flat, well-maintained roads made driving a breeze. Japan’s incredible roadside infrastructure—specifically "Michi-no-Eki" (Roadside Stations)—made the trip highly accessible. Many of these stations feature natural hot springs (onsen), allowing us to relax, soak, and park safely overnight for free. We enjoyed breathtaking nature, incredible local sushi, and deep cultural history, proving that a microvan is more than capable of handling Japan's ultimate road trips.
