If renting from Oita, it takes about 2-2.5 hours to Fukuoka, about 2.5-4 hours to Kumamoto (Aso), and about 3-5 hours to Miyazaki via the Oita Expressway from central Oita City. Yamada Service Area is easy to stop at. Connecting Beppu Onsen and Yufuin within the prefecture with Aso or Kurokawa Onsen makes for a trip enjoyable just for the hot springs.
